This weekend we are having an Open House <\/a>at the school to welcome families and children and others interested in the arts for kids, and to find out from the community what we can do for you all. <\/span><\/p>\n

As an art teacher and an art therapist, I have had the wonderful experience of seeing what a good effect art has on children. They take to it likes ducks to water – which is to say, it is natural for them. I will be writing more posts this week about art and children. This first one is an excerpt from a book by\u00a0 called Arts and the Creation of Mind<\/em> <\/a>by Eliot Eisner, a long time advocate of art education, not just for the sake of creativity but as something which promotes literacy, a questioning and critical mind, problem solving, social skills, good habits, self-discipline, and self-expression of course.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Please come to our school on Saturday morning if you are free. Meet some of our teachers and have some fun with your kids!<\/span><\/p>\n

10 LESSONS THE ARTS TEACH<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships.\u2028 <\/strong>Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it\u2028is judgment rather than rules that prevail.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution\u2028 <\/strong>and that questions can have more than one answer.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The arts celebrate multiple perspectives.\u2028 <\/strong>One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem solving\u2028purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity.\u00a0 <\/strong>Learning in the arts requires the ability and a willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know.<\/strong> The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. The arts teach students that small differences can have large effects.\u2028 <\/strong>The arts traffic in subtleties.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. The arts teach students to think through and within a material. \u2028<\/strong>All art forms employ some means through which images become real.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said.\u2028 <\/strong>When children are invited to disclose what a work of art helps them feel, they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. The arts enable us to have experience we can have from no other source \u2028<\/strong>and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. The arts’ position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young \u2028what adults believe is important.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
